Two of the six academics charged with violating the junta’s ban on political gatherings by organising a public talk remain defiant at the risk of receiving jail terms, saying that the junta order can longer be enacted.
Attachak Sattayanurak and Somchai Preechasinlapakun, history and law lecturers from Chiang Mai University, at 2 pm on Thursday, 24 December 2015, submitted a document on allegations against them to Chang Puak Police Station in Mueang District of the northern province of Chiang Mai.

Thailand might be viewed as one of the most open-minded countries in Southeast Asia when it comes to LGBT. However, the country’s laws still put LGBT people at the margin.
On 14 July 2015, a network of academics and LGBT activists from the Transgender Alliance-Thai (TGA) organised a public seminar at Thammasat University, Tha Prachan Campus, called ‘Gender Recognition Advocacy for Transgender in Thailand (T-GART)’ in order to gather opinions about ways to push for legal recognition of LGBT people in the country.

Thai military and police in northern Thailand have summoned and questioned pro-democracy activists, academics, and students to make sure that nothing will happen during the junta’s cabinet meeting in the province.
From 23 to 29 June 2015, military and police officers in Chiang Mai summoned and questioned more than 15 activists, academics, writers, students, and others in the province to make sure that no anti-junta activity will take place during the junta cabinet meeting on 29-30 June 2015.
