Thai authorities block 2 Prachatai English stories on alleged torture of Kritsuda

Thailand’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has blocked access to two Prachatai English news stories on the alleged torture of red-shirt activist Kritsuda Khunasen, without giving any explanation to the online news outlet.

Internet users from most of the Internet Service Providers in Thailand reported that they could not access the former story on prachatai.org since Sunday afternoon, while the latter was reported inaccessible since Wednesday morning.

When trying to access the two links, Internet users are redirected to http://203.113.26.210/ where the MICT logo appears with generic explanation “This website has inappropriate content and information and was blocked by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.”

The ministry however has not blocked another story on the activist: Junta denies torturing red-shirt activist Kritsuda, insists her happiness was real. Also, the same news stories on the Thai-language Prachatai website are not blocked.

Readers in Thailand can still access the two stories from prachatai.com/english

In 2010, the Thai authorities, under the Democrat Party government, blocked the whole Prachatai website for several months. The authorities gave neither explanation nor compensation.

The two links are among a few thousand webpages which have been blocked since martial law was imposed across the country on 20 May.

Since 2007, Prachatai English has been covering underreported issues in Thailand, especially about democratization and human rights, despite the risk and pressure from the law and the authorities. However, with only 2 full-time reporters and increasing annual operating costs, keeping our work going is a challenge. Your support will ensure we stay a professional media source and be able to expand our team to meet the challenges and deliver timely and in-depth reporting.
