After repeated postponements, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has announced that the next election will be held on 19 August 2018.
On 17 July 2017, Supachai Somcharoen, chair of the ECT, announced the time frame for Thailand’s next general election. The law on the election of MPs will be promulgated by 31 March 2018 while the ECT’s regulations on elections, including electoral districts, will be released in early April. Political parties will be allowed to register for the election in early July.
If everything goes as planned, the election will be scheduled for 19 August 2017. Meanwhile the names of 200 junta-appointed senators will be announced on 8 July 2018.
Supachai added that although the current members of the ECT may be replaced when the new organic law on the ECT comes into effect, the current members will put in place preparations so that the new members will continue the commission's work smoothly.
